On Roma Aeterna we use the following skills:

You get 28 points at character creation to divide among those skills. Skills go from 0 to 6.

You can't get higher than a 6 when you start, if you have a 6 in something that means you're one of the best people in that field!

Your skill level:
0 You have absolutely no idea how this works
1 You are a beginner, you're learning how to use it.
2 You know how to use it but don't do it regularly.
3 You use the skill regularly
4 You are good enough at the skill that it is likely to be your job.
5 You are admired for the work you do with this.
6 You are one of best people in this field

If you keep on roleplaying, you will get votes from other players (players will have 3 votes per week). You can buy an extra point of skill for 3 times your current skill level in votes per point (so from 1 to 2 costs 3 votes, from 4 to 5 is 12 votes), and we will let you buy more points up to a level of 7! If you get a 7 this way, you are one of the most famous people to do the skill in the station and the planet system around it.

Now if you want to use the gamesystem, you type '+roll technology' or for short '+roll tec' for example, if you want to try the technology skill. The game will roll a six sided die for you, and add the result to your skill. So the result could be from 1 to 12 (1 if you have no skill, just 1 on the die, 12 if you have a 6 in the skill and a 6 on the die). If you are rolling for a project by yourself you can see if it worked with the following table.

You need to roll this to succeed:
1 Ah this is a piece of cake.
2 Hey almost anyone can do this.
3 This is not too hard.
4 If you don't know what you're doing, it might be difficult.
5 Don't try this if you don't know how to boogie!
6 Hey, it takes a little work, but it's possible.
7 This takes practice!
8 You want to really focus on this one!
9 This is a challenge even for someone with good training!
10 This is really difficult and near to impossible!
11 You're not sure this is a good idea!
12 Are you insane?

So for our technology example, if you'd want to fix an engine that is overburning while it's running and the time pressure is really high, maybe you'd have to try and roll a 10 or higher! If you're just fixing a broken light, it might be a 3. So if you get a 5, you'll have easily fixed the light, but if that was for the engine I'm afraid it didn't work!

Now often you will want to roll because you are in a roleplay conflict with someone else. That would go like this: Say you're in a fight. One person attacks, and uses offense, the other uses defense. Both of you use +roll. THe attacker uses +roll offense (you can shorten it to +roll off) and the other uses +roll defense (or +roll def). Now the person who gets the highest number from the code is the winner. So if the attacker rolls 8 and the defender rolls 9, the defender manages to somehow block or evade the blow. If the attacker rolls 8 and the defender rolls 6, the blow hits. How much damage you can withstand is dependent on your endurance, and you'll have to use your common sense for this. A good rule of thumb would be that you can handle recieving as many blows as your endurance score is high. You don't die you just go unconscious when you have reached your limit. The same way of rolling goes for opposites like magic and resistance or subterfuge and perception.

All the skillnames can be shortened after +roll to 3 letters or more, except persuasion and perception, those will need 4 letters so they don't get confused. So +roll hea for rolling healing will also work.

Because the nations did not develop like they did on earth there are only a limited number of languages. Everyone is assumed to be using Latin as their main way of communication. Everyone speaks Latin and people get three other languages to speak. Greek is by far the most common second language. Languages not based on Earth like the element connected languages or Elvish tend to be the least known. You can learn another language for 3 votes on top of your three starting languages. If you have ideas for more languages let us know, we might decide to add them.
